Day 2:  Marrakech City tour with Local Guide

After breakfast at your riad you’ll meet your licensed local guide for a full-day exploration of Marrakech—one of Morocco’s most captivating imperial cities. The Red City as it’s known is a sensory feast of colour, sound and scent and a local guide is the key to unlocking its secrets.

Your tour typically begins with a visit to the Koutoubia Mosque the largest mosque in Marrakech  famous for its 77-metre-high minaret that dominates the city’s skyline. From there, you’ll explore the magnificent Bahia Palace a 19th-century masterpiece of Islamic architecture with intricate mosaics, carved cedar ceilings and tranquil courtyards and gardens.

Next you’ll visit the Saadian Tombs sealed for centuries and rediscovered in 1917. These royal tombs are adorned with intricate Hispano-Moorish carvings, showcasing the grandeur of the Saadian dynasty. Each section of the souk specialises in different crafts—leather, metals, textiles, spices, and ceramics and your guide will explain the traditional techniques still used by local artisans.

You’ll also visit the Mellah (the historic Jewish Quarter) and its synagogue  learning about the rich multicultural history of Marrakech. The tour culminates at the famous Jemaa el-Fna Square—the beating heart of Marrakech. The road climbs through the winding Tizi n’Tichka Pass (2,260 metres) the highest road pass in North Africa. The drive is genuinely breathtaking Berber villages cling to hillsides, terraced almond groves cascade down valleys, and the views back across the plain to Marrakech are spectacular.

The first major stop is the Kasbah of Ait Benhaddou a UNESCO World Heritage site and one of Morocco’s most celebrated historic fortifications. Built from clay and straw this ancient ksar has appeared in countless international productions including Gladiator Game of Thrones, Lawrence of Arabia and The Mummy. You’ll cross the riverbed to the old village and walk up through the earthen buildings for spectacular views from the top.

After lunch in Ouarzazate—sometimes called the “Hollywood of Africa” for its Atlas Film Studios—you’ll briefly stop at Kasbah Taourirt a striking architectural site. The journey continues through Skoura, a large oasis of date palms and on through the fragrant Valley of Roses at Kalaat M’Gouna, where roses are grown commercially for perfume and cosmetics.

In the late afternoon you’ll arrive in the dramatic Dades Valley, often called the “Valley of a Thousand Kasbahs”. On the way you’ll stop at the famous “monkey fingers” rock formations towering rock spires sculpted by wind and water. You’ll check into your hotel and enjoy a traditional Moroccan dinner surrounded by the peaceful mountain landscape.

Day 4: Dades Valley – Todra Gorges – Erfoud – Merzouga

After breakfast the drive continues east for 3 to 4 hours (with stops) to one of Morocco’s most spectacular natural wonders: the Todra Gorges. Here towering limestone cliffs rise around 300 metres on either side, creating a narrow canyon that attracts climbers and photographers from around the world. You’ll have time to walk along the riverbed and take in the breathtaking scenery.

Continuing east, you’ll pass through the palm groves of Tinghir and Tinjdad and on to Erfoud, a desert town famous for its fossils and black marble. The whole region around Erfoud sits on what was once a shallow sea, and trilobite fossils are abundant. You’ll stop at a local workshop to see unique fossil crafts.

By mid-afternoon, the first dunes of Erg Chebbi appear dramatically against the horizon. You’ll arrive in the village of Merzouga, on the edge of the Sahara. Here, you’ll take out your overnight luggage—your main luggage will be transported directly to the camp—before mounting your camel and beginning the trek across the golden dunes.

The camel ride takes about 1 to 1.5 hours, with a stop on a high ridge to watch the sunset transform the sand into a palette of gold, amber, and copper. You’ll arrive at a traditional Berber desert camp, where you’ll be welcomed with mint tea. Your private tent offers a blend of traditional style and modern comfort—luxury options include a suite bathrooms and showers. After a delicious Moroccan dinner gather around the campfire for Berber drumming and music under one of the world’s darkest skies.

Today is dedicated to exploring the Merzouga region in depth—a full day of desert immersion that goes far beyond the dunes. You’ll embark on a 4×4 excursion around the Erg Chebbi dunes to discover:

Your second night is spent in a comfortable hotel or auberge near the dunes, with a delicious dinner and the option to return to the desert for one more evening under the stars.

You’ll stop for lunch in Midelt, a town nestled between the Middle and High Atlas mountains. As you cross the Middle Atlas  the landscape transforms from desert to alpine forests a dramatic change that reveals the incredible diversity of Morocco’s geography.

The highlight of the afternoon is the Cedar Forest of Azrou  home to a troop of wild Barbary macaques—Morocco’s native monkeys. A stop here offers a chance to see these playful creatures in their natural habitat, often gathering near the roadside. The cedar forest is one of the largest in Morocco and provides a cool, refreshing contrast to the desert heat.

The journey continues through Ifrane, a charming alpine town often called “Little Switzerland” for its European-style chalet houses manicured gardens, and cedar forests. You’ll have time to stretch your legs and admire this unique mountain town before continuing toward Fes.

    Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

6 Days Desert Tour From Marrakech

    1. Is this tour suitable for solo travellers or families?

Absolutely. This 6-day tour is designed to accommodate solo travellers, couples, groups of friends, and families. The itinerary balances cultural exploration, scenic drives, and desert adventure, offering something for everyone. Families with children should note that the camel trek is gentle but can be adjusted—alternative 4×4 transfers to the desert camp are available upon request. Private tours can also be tailored to your group’s specific needs and pace.

    2. What should I pack for this 6-day tour?

Pack layers! The weather varies dramatically across the six days—Marrakech can be warm, the High Atlas mountains are cool, the desert is hot during the day but cold at night, and the Middle Atlas cedar forests can be chilly.

Essentials include: warm layers (fleece or jacket) for desert nights and mountain areas, comfortable trousers for the camel ride (avoid shorts), sunscreen, sunglasses, a hat, a scarf or turban for sand protection, a headlamp or phone flashlight, comfortable walking shoes, and a small day-bag for overnight essentials during the camel trek. Don’t forget your camera—you’ll need it!

    3. What happens to my luggage during the camel trek?

Your main luggage (suitcases or large backpacks) remains locked and securely stored inside the vehicle or is transported by 4×4 directly to the desert camp. You only need to bring a small overnight bag with essentials for the night in the desert. The 4×4 will have your luggage waiting for you when you arrive at the camp.

    4. Is the driving really that long, and what if I get carsick?

The total distance across the 6 days is significant, with Day 3 and Day 6 being the longest driving days (approximately 7–9 hours each). However, the route is broken up with frequent stops at major attractions, photo opportunities, and lunch breaks.

The Tizi n’Tichka pass has many winding hairpin turns. If you’re prone to motion sickness, tell the operator when booking and consider bringing medication.

Private tours can stop more often for breaks if needed. The ever-changing landscapes—from snow-capped peaks to palm oases to golden dunes to alpine forests—make the time pass quickly.

Out of this world Words can’t even describe how this whole trip has been. From the very start Youssif was on time, matter of fact he was waiting for us and he welcomed us with open arms. We stayed with him for about two and half weeks and did everything from sleeping in the middle of the desert, riding camels, atvs, out of this world views and amazing places to eat everything single time. I think god for Youssif being our tour guide because we come here every two years and will use him every single time. If anyone is looking for a tour guide that is professional, on time, matters, knowledgeable and most importantly funny.

Un accueil incroyable Quels voyages … ! My guy Youssef really knows how to hook things up properly. Always responsive, super chill, and made sure everything was running like clockwork. The schedule was on point, nothing felt rushed, and the whole experience was straight vibes. You can tell he actually cares about making your trip lit, not just doing the bare minimum.
