3 Days Desert Trip from Marrakech to Merzouga

Day 1: Marrakech – High Atlas – Ait Benhaddou – Ouarzazate – Dades Valley

Your adventure begins with an early morning pick-up from your hotel or riad in Marrakech typically between 7:00 and 7:50 AM. You’ll head south toward the High Atlas Mountains climbing via the winding Tizi n’Tichka Pass (2,260 metres) the highest road pass in North Africa. The drive is genuinely scenic Berber villages built into the hillsides terraced almond groves and views back across the plain to Marrakech. The journey to Ait Benhaddou takes about 4 hours with stops for photos and a breakfast break at a charming café.

The first major stop is the Kasbah of Ait Benhaddou a UNESCO World Heritage site and one of Morocco’s most celebrated historic fortifications. Built from clay and straw, this ancient ksar has appeared in countless international productions. You’ll cross the riverbed to the old village and walk up through the earthen buildings for spectacular views from the top. You can join a local guide for a walking tour through the ancient ksar (guide tip not included).

After lunch in Ouarzazate sometimes called the “Hollywood of Africa” for its Atlas Film Studios you’ll briefly stop at Kasbah Taourirt a striking architectural site. The journey continues through Skoura, a large oasis of date palms and on through the fragrant Valley of Roses at Kalaat M’Gouna where roses are grown commercially for perfume and cosmetics. You may visit a local cooperative producing rose water and natural cosmetics (optional).

In the late afternoon, you’ll arrive in the dramatic Dades Valley often called the “Valley of a Thousand Kasbahs”. On the way you’ll stop at the famous “monkey fingers” rock formations. You’ll check into your hotel and enjoy a traditional Moroccan dinner surrounded by the peaceful mountain landscape.

Day 2: Dades Valley – Todra Gorges – Erfoud – Merzouga Desert (Camel Trek & Desert Camp)

After breakfast the drive continues east for 3 to 4 hours (with stops) to one of Morocco’s most spectacular natural wonders: the Todra Gorges. Here, towering limestone cliffs rise around 300 metres on either side, creating a narrow canyon that attracts climbers and photographers from around the world. You’ll have time to walk along the riverbank and take in the breathtaking scenery.

Continuing east, you’ll pass through the palm groves of Tinghir and on to Erfoud, a desert town famous for its fossils and black marble. The whole region around Erfoud sits on what was once a shallow sea and trilobite fossils are abundant If time permits you’ll stop at a local workshop to see unique fossil crafts.

By mid-afternoon, the first dunes of Erg Chebbi appear dramatically against the horizon. You’ll arrive in the village of Merzouga, on the edge of the Sahara. Here you’ll take out your overnight luggage your main luggage will be transported by 4×4 directly to the camp. Then you’ll mount your camel and begin the trek across the golden dunes to the camp.

The camel ride takes about 1 to 1.5 hours, with a stop on a high ridge to watch the sunset transform the sand into a palette of gold, amber and copper. You’ll arrive at a traditional Berber desert camp where you’ll be welcomed with mint tea. Your private tent offers a blend of traditional style and modern comfort luxury options include en-suite bathrooms and showers. After a delicious Moroccan dinner, gather around the campfire for Berber drumming and music under one of the world’s darkest skies.

Day 3: Merzouga – Sunrise Camel Ride – Draa Valley – Ouarzazate – Marrakech

Wake up early for one of the most magical moments of the trip: sunrise over the Sahara dunes. Watch as the first light of day transforms the golden sands into a breathtaking display of colour. After breakfast at the camp you’ll ride the camels back to Merzouga or return by 4×4 if you prefer where you can freshen up before beginning the scenic journey back to Marrakech.

The return route takes a different path passing through the spectacular Draa Valley one of Morocco’s most beautiful oasis landscapes. You’ll travel through the historic towns of Alnif, Tazarine and Agdez before reaching Ouarzazate The drive continues back over the Tizi n’Tichka Pass, with one last chance to admire the dramatic mountain scenery before descending toward Marrakech.

You’ll arrive back in Marrakech in the evening, typically between 7:00 and 9:00 PM  where the tour concludes with drop-off at your accommodation.
