4 Days Desert Tour from Marrakech to Zagora and chegaga

Day 1: Marrakech – High Atlas – Ait Benhaddou – Ouarzazate – Draa Valley – Zagora

Your desert adventure begins with an early morning pickup from your hotel or riad in Marrakech  typically between 7:00 AM and 8:00 AM  You’ll head south toward the High Atlas Mountains climbing through the winding Tizi n’Tichka Pass (2,260 metres) the highest road pass in North Africa . The drive is genuinely spectacular Berber villages cling to hillsides  terraced almond groves cascade down valleys and the views back across the plain to Marrakech are breathtaking. You’ll have several photo stops along the way to capture the dramatic mountain scenery.

The first major stop is the Kasbah of Ait Benhaddou a UNESCO World Heritage site and one of Morocco’s most celebrated historic fortifications. Built from clay and straw this ancient ksar has appeared in countless international productions including Gladiator Game of Thrones  and The Mummy. You’ll have time to cross the riverbed walk through the earthen buildings  and climb to the top for spectacular views.

Continue to Ouarzazate Morocco’s “Hollywood” where you can stop for lunch and visit the Taourirt Kasbah or the famous Atlas Film Studios . The journey then takes you through the stunning Draa Valley Morocco’s longest river valley  with its vast palm groves ancient kasbahs  and fortified villages . You’ll pass through Agdez  a tranquil town nestled at the foot of Jebel Kissane  before arriving in Zagora in the late afternon in zagora

Zagora is a historic caravan town that still exudes the spirit of desert trade it was from here that caravans once departed for Timbuktu . Check into your hotel or riad and enjoy a traditional Moroccan dinner at your accomodation overnight in zagora.

Day 2: Zagora – Tamegroute – M’Hamid – Erg Chegaga Desert (Camel Trek & Desert Camp)

After breakfast  explore Zagora in the morning before beginning your journey deeper into the Sahara. Your first stop is Tamegroute  a remarkable village famous for its underground kasbah  ancient Quranic library dating back to the 11th century  and traditional green pottery workshops. You’ll visit the library to see its collection of ancient manuscripts and observe local artisans at work.

The journey then continues to M’Hamid El Ghizlane  the last village before the great Sahara begins. M’Hamid is a historic camel market and a crossroads from which caravans once embarked toward Timbuktu. Here the paved road ends and the true desert adventure starts.

From M’Hamid, you’ll switch to a 4×4 vehicle and head off-road into the desert following the historic caravan trail through the Bani Mountains. You’ll pass by the sacred oasis of Oumlalag before arriving at the majestic Erg Chegaga dunes the largest and wildest dunes in Morocco rising over 100 metres high.

Upon arrival  you’ll enjoy a camel ride at sunset across the golden sands. As the sun dips below the horizon the dunes transform into a breathtaking palette of gold and amber. You’ll arrive at a traditional Berber desert camp  where you’ll be welcomed with mint tea. After a delicious Moroccan dinner, gather around the campfire for Berber drumming and music under one of the world’s darkest skies. You’ll spend the night in a private tent  surrounded by the serene silence of the Sahara.

Day 3: Erg Chegaga – Sunrise – Foum Zguid – Taznakht – Ouarzazate

Wake up early for one of the most magical moments of the trip  sunrise over the Sahara dunes. Watch as the first light of day transforms the golden sands into a breathtaking display of colour. After breakfast at the camp you’ll depart across the desert landscape.

The journey takes you through rocky plains dry lake areas and wide open Saharan scenery toward Foum Zguid. You’ll cross the dry Lake Iriqui along the way. Continue by paved road to Taznakht a town famous throughout Morocco for its rich Berber weaving traditions. Here you’ll stop to visit a carpet cooperative, where you can discover authentic handmade Berber carpets and learn about local craftsmanship.

Continue to Ouarzazate where you’ll check into your hotel or riad for the night. Known as the “Hollywood of Africa” Ouarzazate is home to the famous Atlas Film Studios and the Taourirt Kasbah. Enjoy dinner at your accommodation.

Day 4: Ouarzazate – Ait Benhaddou – High Atlas – Marrakech

After breakfast  you’ll have the opportunity to visit the Taourirt Kasbah in Ouarzazate one of the largest and best preserved kasbahs in Morocco. From there  drive back toward Marrakech, stopping once more at the Kasbah of Ait Benhaddou for additional sightseeing or photos this time with the morning light illuminating the ancient clay walls from a different angle.

Cross the High Atlas Mountains once more via the scenic Tizi n’Tichka Pass  with final photo stops to capture the dramatic mountain views. You’ll descend toward Marrakech arriving in the afternoon typically between 5:00 PM and 6:00 PM with drop-off at your accommodation.
