3 Days Desert Trip from Fes to Marrakech

Day 1: Fes – Ifrane – Azrou Cedar Forest – Midelt – Ziz Valley – Merzouga

Your Sahara adventure begins with an early morning pickup from your hotel or riad in Fes typically between 7:00 AM and 7:45 AM. Leaving the city behind you’ll travel south through the Middle Atlas Mountains one of Morocco’s most scenic regions.

Your first stop is Ifrane a charming town often called “Little Switzerland” for its European-style chalet houses, manicured gardens, and alpine setting. It’s also known as the cleanest city in Africa. From there, continue to the Cedar Forest of Azrou, home to a troop of wild Barbary macaques Morocco’s native monkeys. You’ll have time to stop and observe these playful creatures in their natural habitat among the ancient trees.

Continue through dramatic mountain landscapes and traditional Berber villages, crossing green open fields where nomadic herders graze their flocks. Stop for lunch in Midelt a town nestled between the Middle and High Atlas mountains known for its mineral-rich mountains and apple orchards.

In the afternoon, the landscape transforms as you descend toward the Sahara. You’ll pass through the spectacular Ziz Valley, famous for its long palm oasis and panoramic viewpoints overlooking the lush ribbon of palm trees cutting through the arid rock.

As the scenery gradually shifts from mountains to desert you’ll arrive in Merzouga at the edge of the Erg Chebbi dunes in the late afternoon. Here you’ll enjoy traditional mint tea at a kasbah near the dunes before swapping your vehicle for a camel.

Mount your camel for a sunset trek across the golden dunes the ride takes about 1 to 1.5 hours, with a stop on a high ridge to watch the sunset paint the sand in shades of gold and amber  You’ll arrive at a traditional Berber desert camp where you’ll be welcomed with mint tea. After a delicious Moroccan dinner, gather around the campfire for Berber drumming and music under a star-filled desert sky  before spending the night in your private tent.

Day 2: Merzouga – Sunrise – Rissani – Todra Gorges – Dades Valley

Wake up early for one of the most magical moments of the trip: sunrise over the Sahara dunes. Watch as the first light of day transforms the golden sands into a breathtaking display of colour. After breakfast at the camp you’ll ride the camels back to Merzouga or return by 4×4 if you prefer to meet your driver.

From Merzouga begin your journey toward the Dades Valley. If your travel day falls on a Tuesday Thursday, or Sunday, you’ll have the opportunity to visit the Rissani market one of the biggest traditional markets in the area where locals gather to buy and sell goods. Continue through the palm groves of Tinghir and Tinjdad to the spectacular Todra Gorges. Here towering limestone cliffs rise around 300 metres on either side creating a narrow canyon that attracts climbers and photographers from around the world. You’ll have free time to walk along the riverbed and enjoy the breathtaking scenery.

Continue along the famous Road of a Thousand Kasbahs, an ancient caravan route lined with impressive mud-brick fortresses. Pass through traditional villages, palm groves  and dramatic desert landscapes before arriving in the Dades Valley in the evening. On the way you’ll stop at the famous “monkey fingers” rock formations towering rock spires sculpted by wind and water. Check into your hotel and enjoy a traditional Moroccan dinner.

Day 3: Dades Valley – Ouarzazate – Ait Benhaddou – High Atlas – Marrakech

After breakfast begin the journey toward Marrakech. Drive through the Rose Valley a route also known as the Road of a Thousand Kasbahs, famous for growing Damask roses used in perfume and cosmetics. Your first major stop is Ouarzazate sometimes called the “Hollywood of Africa” for its Atlas Film Studios. You’ll stop at the Taourirt Kasbah  one of the largest and best preserved kasbahs in Morocco.

From Ouarzazate continue to the Kasbah of Ait Benhaddou a UNESCO World Heritage site and one of Morocco’s most celebrated historic fortifications. Built from clay and straw, this ancient ksar has appeared in countless international productions including Gladiator Game of Thrones, and The Mummy. You’ll have time to cross the riverbed walk through the earthen buildings and climb to the top for spectacular views.

In the afternoon  cross the High Atlas Mountains via the scenic Tizi n’Tichka Pass (2,260 metres) the highest road in Morocco. The drive offers several stops for photos and panoramic views of Berber villages and dramatic mountain landscapes. You’ll descend toward Marrakech arriving in the late afternoon or early evening—typically between 5:00 PM and 7:00 PM with drop-off at your accommodation.
