6 Days Desert Tour From Marrakech

Day 1: Marrakech _ Airport  transfer

Your 6-day Moroccan adventure begins the moment you land at Marrakech Menara Airport (RAK) Upon arrival you’ll clear passport control and collect your luggage before being met by your driver or tour representative who will be holding a sign with your name or company name sign. You’ll be transferred to your hotel or riad in the heart of Marrakech where you can check in and relax after your journey.

The rest of the day is yours to enjoy at your own pace. You might choose to unwind at your riad’s rooftop terrace with a glass of mint tea take a gentle stroll through the nearby streets of the medina or simply rest and prepare for the exciting days ahead. Your driver will brief you on the following day’s city tour and confirm your pickup time.

Day 2:  Marrakech City tour with Local Guide

After breakfast at your riad you’ll meet your licensed local guide for a full-day exploration of Marrakech—one of Morocco’s most captivating imperial cities. The Red City as it’s known is a sensory feast of colour, sound and scent and a local guide is the key to unlocking its secrets.

Your tour typically begins with a visit to the Koutoubia Mosque the largest mosque in Marrakech  famous for its 77-metre-high minaret that dominates the city’s skyline. From there, you’ll explore the magnificent Bahia Palace a 19th-century masterpiece of Islamic architecture with intricate mosaics, carved cedar ceilings and tranquil courtyards and gardens.

Next you’ll visit the Saadian Tombs sealed for centuries and rediscovered in 1917. These royal tombs are adorned with intricate Hispano-Moorish carvings, showcasing the grandeur of the Saadian dynasty. You’ll also pass by the Ben Youssef Madrasa one of the largest Islamic colleges in North Africa with its stunning geometric tiles and peaceful courtyard.

The tour then leads you into the heart of the UNESCO-listed Medina a maze of narrow alleyways where you’ll discover the vibrant souks (markets) of Marrakech. Each section of the souk specialises in different crafts—leather, metals, textiles, spices, and ceramics and your guide will explain the traditional techniques still used by local artisans.

You’ll also visit the Mellah (the historic Jewish Quarter) and its synagogue  learning about the rich multicultural history of Marrakech. The tour culminates at the famous Jemaa el-Fna Square—the beating heart of Marrakech. As the afternoon unfolds, the square transforms into an open-air theatre of snake charmers, storytellers, musicians and food stalls. Your guide will share the stories behind this UNESCO-recognised cultural space before leaving you to explore at your own pace.

Day 3: Marrakech – High Atlas – Ait Benhaddou – Dades Valley

After breakfast, you’ll depart Marrakech and head south toward the High Atlas Mountains. The road climbs through the winding Tizi n’Tichka Pass (2,260 metres) the highest road pass in North Africa. The drive is genuinely breathtaking Berber villages cling to hillsides, terraced almond groves cascade down valleys, and the views back across the plain to Marrakech are spectacular.

The first major stop is the Kasbah of Ait Benhaddou a UNESCO World Heritage site and one of Morocco’s most celebrated historic fortifications. Built from clay and straw this ancient ksar has appeared in countless international productions including Gladiator Game of Thrones, Lawrence of Arabia and The Mummy. You’ll cross the riverbed to the old village and walk up through the earthen buildings for spectacular views from the top.

After lunch in Ouarzazate—sometimes called the “Hollywood of Africa” for its Atlas Film Studios—you’ll briefly stop at Kasbah Taourirt a striking architectural site. The journey continues through Skoura, a large oasis of date palms and on through the fragrant Valley of Roses at Kalaat M’Gouna, where roses are grown commercially for perfume and cosmetics.

In the late afternoon you’ll arrive in the dramatic Dades Valley, often called the “Valley of a Thousand Kasbahs”. On the way you’ll stop at the famous “monkey fingers” rock formations towering rock spires sculpted by wind and water. You’ll check into your hotel and enjoy a traditional Moroccan dinner surrounded by the peaceful mountain landscape.

Day 4: Dades Valley – Todra Gorges – Erfoud – Merzouga

After breakfast the drive continues east for 3 to 4 hours (with stops) to one of Morocco’s most spectacular natural wonders: the Todra Gorges. Here towering limestone cliffs rise around 300 metres on either side, creating a narrow canyon that attracts climbers and photographers from around the world. You’ll have time to walk along the riverbed and take in the breathtaking scenery.

Continuing east, you’ll pass through the palm groves of Tinghir and Tinjdad and on to Erfoud, a desert town famous for its fossils and black marble. The whole region around Erfoud sits on what was once a shallow sea, and trilobite fossils are abundant. You’ll stop at a local workshop to see unique fossil crafts.

By mid-afternoon, the first dunes of Erg Chebbi appear dramatically against the horizon. You’ll arrive in the village of Merzouga, on the edge of the Sahara. Here, you’ll take out your overnight luggage—your main luggage will be transported directly to the camp—before mounting your camel and beginning the trek across the golden dunes.

The camel ride takes about 1 to 1.5 hours, with a stop on a high ridge to watch the sunset transform the sand into a palette of gold, amber, and copper. You’ll arrive at a traditional Berber desert camp, where you’ll be welcomed with mint tea. Your private tent offers a blend of traditional style and modern comfort—luxury options include a suite bathrooms and showers. After a delicious Moroccan dinner gather around the campfire for Berber drumming and music under one of the world’s darkest skies.

Day 5: Explore Merzouga Desert and Know the Nomads Life

Wake up early for one of the most magical moments of the trip: sunrise over the Sahara dunes. Watch as the first light of day transforms the golden sands into a breathtaking display of colour. After breakfast at the camp, you’ll return to Merzouga by camel or 4×4.

Today is dedicated to exploring the Merzouga region in depth—a full day of desert immersion that goes far beyond the dunes. You’ll embark on a 4×4 excursion around the Erg Chebbi dunes to discover:

• Nomadic families living in traditional desert tents you’ll learn about their way of life hospitality and how they survive in this harsh yet beautiful environment
• Khamlia village famous for its Gnawa music its inhabitants originate from sub-Saharan countries like Mali,Sudan, and Niger. You’ll experience an authentic Gnawa performance and learn about their cultural traditions
• Hidden desert oases surrounded by palm trees, offering a striking contrast to the endless sand
• The wild lake of Merzouga (also called the flamingo lake), where you can spot seasonal flamingos and other birdlife
• Old mines and fossil areas, giving you a glimpse into the region’s geological history
• Panoramic viewpoints over the Erg Chebbi dune sea, where you can see the shifting colours of the sands

You’ll have free time for lunch in a local restaurant in Merzouga, followed by the afternoon to relax or participate in optional activities such as sandboarding or quad biking in the dunes. Your second night is spent in a comfortable hotel or auberge near the dunes, with a delicious dinner and the option to return to the desert for one more evening under the stars.

Day 6: Merzouga – Ziz Valley – Midelt – Azrou Cedar Forest – Ifrane – Fes

After breakfast  you’ll bid farewell to the Sahara and begin the scenic drive north toward Fes. The route takes you through the spectacular Ziz Valley a lush ribbon of palm trees cutting through the arid rock—with plenty of photo stops along the way.

You’ll stop for lunch in Midelt, a town nestled between the Middle and High Atlas mountains. As you cross the Middle Atlas  the landscape transforms from desert to alpine forests a dramatic change that reveals the incredible diversity of Morocco’s geography.

The highlight of the afternoon is the Cedar Forest of Azrou  home to a troop of wild Barbary macaques—Morocco’s native monkeys. A stop here offers a chance to see these playful creatures in their natural habitat, often gathering near the roadside. The cedar forest is one of the largest in Morocco and provides a cool, refreshing contrast to the desert heat.

The journey continues through Ifrane, a charming alpine town often called “Little Switzerland” for its European-style chalet houses manicured gardens, and cedar forests. You’ll have time to stretch your legs and admire this unique mountain town before continuing toward Fes.

You’ll arrive in Fes in the evening typically between 6:00 and 7:00 PM where the tour concludes with drop-off at your accommodation in the imperial city.
